![]() ![]() ![]() Apparently he’s the son of the equally unmemorable lead from the last game and as Armageddon begins he’s helping to try recapture an atmosphere processing station, or whatever the game calls it, from some cosplaying cultists. Thanks to the tricksy cult leader he manages to mess things up and everyone is forced to start living underground, at which point you’re then tricked into unleashing some alien (well, technically native) monsters. This is no Gears Of War though, in the same way that spray-on cheese is not stilton.Your first inkling that this may not be game of the year material is the boring CGI intro (which takes all of 20 seconds to start ripping off Aliens) and the realisation that you’re playing yet another bald space marine with less personality than an expired whelk. That’s not necessarily a problem but it does put it up against some rather more direct competition when it comes to burly sci-fi shooters and insectoid enemies. It’s just the rest of the game that’s the problem. For some reason, perhaps in an attempt to distinguish it further from Saints Row, this is no longer an open world game, but instead a linear third person shooter. It got very repetitive very quickly, and had a terrible story with no discernable personality, but what it did have was a nice big open world and the most destructible scenery in gaming today (or at least until Battlefield 3).We’re still baffled as to why Violation haven’t made more of its Geo-Mod 2.0 technology, but the way it allows you to smash, explode or otherwise demolish just about any free-standing structure is still hugely impressive – not to mention enormous fun. Instead it’s done the opposite.Although the first two games in the series were first person shooters, Guerrilla was basically Saints Row on Mars – unsurprising considering it was by the same developer. We hadn’t seen much of either at the preview stage, so based purely on 2009’s Red Faction: Guerrilla we were hoping that this would sand off its rough edges and finally turn the franchise into an A-lister. ![]() If Dungeon Siege III has been a welcome surprise this week then Armageddon has been the exact opposite.
